What Is FIRST?

Educate   Inspire

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics is a non-profit organization that aims to inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through engaging, hands-on robotics programs and competitions. FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is the highest level of competition offered by FIRST and involves high school students building robots to compete in a fast-paced and challenging game. FIRST also offers programs for younger students, including the FIRST Lego League (FLL) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), which focus on building foundational STEM skills and engaging students in problem-solving through fun and interactive robotics challenges.

Why FIRST?

FIRST Robotics provides a unique learning experience that helps students develop a range of technical and life skills. Some of the skills that students can learn through FIRST Robotics include:

Engineering and Technology:

Students learn about the design and construction of robots, as well as programming and control systems.

Problem-Solving:

FIRST Robotics challenges students to solve complex problems, from mechanical design and software development to strategy and teamwork

Teamwork:

FIRST Robotics is a team-based activity, which encourages students to work together to achieve common goals, develop communication skills, and build relationships.

Leadership:

Students can take on leadership roles in their teams, such as project manager, lead builder, or lead programmer, which helps them develop leadership and management skills.

Public Speaking:

FIRST Robotics includes opportunities for students to present their projects and share their experiences with others, which helps them develop public speaking and presentation skills.

Community Engagement:

FIRST Robotics encourages students to give back to their communities through volunteering, mentoring, and promoting STEM education.
